How to diaper a newborn baby

New parents spend a lot of time changing diapers— babies can use 10 or more diapers a day!

Changing a diaper may seem complicated at first glance. But with a little practice, you'll find it's easy to keep your baby clean and dry.

Before diapering your baby, gather a few supplies:

Miniboss diaper
Warm water and cotton balls (for babies with sensitive skin) or clean clothes or diaper wipes
Ointment for the prevention and treatment of rashes
A changing pad or cloth diaper to put under your baby

Make sure you have all your supplies on hand. Babies should never be left unattended, even for a second. Even newborn babies can surprise parents with their ability to roll over.

Wiping:
Using wet wipes, cotton balls, or baby wipes, gently wipe your baby from front to back (never wipe from back to front, especially for girls, or you could spread bacteria that can cause UTIs). You may want to lift your baby's feet by their ankles to lower them. Do not forget about wrinkles in the thigh and hip area.

After you finish wiping, dry your baby with a clean towel and apply the ointment.

If you use disposable diapers:

Open the diaper and slide it under your baby while gently lifting your baby's legs and feet. The back part with the adhesive strips should be level with your baby's belly button.
Bring the front of the diaper between your baby's legs and onto his tummy.
Bring the adhesive strips around and fasten tightly. Be careful not to stick the tape to your baby's skin.

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

If you use disposables, empty the bin regularly (about once a day). This prevents diaper pail odor.
If you find any marks on the baby's legs and back, the diaper is too tight. Next time tie it in a looser shape. If that doesn't help, your baby may be ready for a larger diaper size.

If your baby's umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, fold the waist of the diaper down to keep the area dry. Continue to do this for a few days after the cord falls off to prevent irritation.
Always wash your hands thoroughly after changing your baby's diaper to prevent the spread of germs.

Prevention of diaper rash:
It is common for babies to have diaper rash. However, if the rash occurs frequently, lasts more than 2 or 3 days, or worsens, see a pediatrician. Also let them know if your baby has a fever with the rash, or if the rash looks painful, bright red, or blisters.

To prevent and heal diaper rash, keep these things in mind:

Change diapers frequently and immediately after bowel movements. Clean the area gently. Vigorous wiping or rubbing can further irritate the rash.

Congratulations! You are now a diaper master :)
